It’s not lupus!

Well, after close to two weeks, my lab results are back and it’s not lupus! I guess the good Dr. House was right after all. (Hat tip: Sara)

I’m incredibly thrilled to learn that I don’t have lupus, but apparently 30 is the new 70 because I do have osteoarthritis. So in September, when I turn the big 3-0, please refrain from the walking canes, black balloons and over-the-hill posters. I will, however, gladly accept old-people vitamins and Advil liqua-gels. 😉

The diagnosis didn’t come as a huge surprise, but I was relieved for a couple of reasons. I’m thankful it’s not lupus, and I’m thankful it’s not rheumatoid arthritis. Both carry more symptoms and complications as well as higher risks for down-the-road types of things. I also didn’t test positive for Celiac which is another blessing.

The returned lab results don’t change anything though. I’m still planning on continuing with the Paleo/gluten-free diet changes. I want to change my lifestyle, not just fix something temporarily. I feel better overall, and I wouldn’t trade that for the biggest pancake you could find. I can still eat anything I want, I just have to take a few extra steps and cook a little more often. I enjoy cooking anyway, so I see it as a positive benefit.

I didn’t wake up nearly as tired today, and I’m beginning to see minor differences in my hands. The joint pain and swelling is still there, but the aches are not as severe. My right thumb still won’t straighten out and is still slightly swollen, but I’m able to put a significant amount of pressure on it that I haven’t been able to do in quite a while. I can open doorknobs without pain, tie shoes without pain and even write without pain. It’s been months since I could say that.

So while I’m not perfect or “healed” completely, I’m seeing enough results to say I’m happy with the decisions I’ve made. I’m excited to continue and see what else lies ahead. For now, I’m thanking the Lord for answered prayers — it’s not lupus.
