This post has absolutely nothing to do with diabetes. In fact, it has nothing to do with anything I regularly blog about. But, if you follow me on Twitter or we’re friends on Facebook, then you know about my two kids. They’re not your typical children as they each have four legs, don’t speak and are covered in fur. But they are my kids, nonetheless.
The other night, I watched a short documentary on Netflix called, “My Dog: An Unconditional Love Story.” It was such a wonderful movie. The film featured several famous actors, actresses, singers, songwriters, directors and others who shared a close relationship with their dogs. The film did a beautiful job of showing people as people. It doesn’t matter what you do for a living or how much money you have — we’re all human and we all have a need to be loved unconditionally. Dogs are absolutely perfect at this sort of thing. Even now, as I sit and write, I have two dogs next to me. Barkley is sitting in the floor staring at me with a beggar’s face because she wants on the couch. Lucky is jumping from the couch to the floor to the couch to the floor, clipping Barkley with each pass. She only stops long enough to nip an ear or a tail to get a growl out of her older sister. It’s hysterical to watch.
I’m not a famous actress or writer. I don’t have a purebred dog, nor do I even have well-trained dogs. I have two mutts whose tails wag at the sound of my car pulling up to my apartment. They pant and lick and beg for me to love them, and I do. Even after a scolding, they still love me. Even when I leave them home too long, they love me. Even when I run out of time in the day to walk them very far, they still love me. Unconditionally. Always.
These girls are such a special part of my soul, and I love coming home to them every single day. They shower me with kisses and curl up next to me for movies. They hug me when I’m sad and they laugh and play when I’m happy. Sometimes, they even wake me up when my blood sugar is low. They are man’s best friend… they are my best friends. They know all my secrets, and they still love me unconditionally.
This movie reminded me that it doesn’t matter what our lives are like or how different we are — everyone wants love and that’s what dogs give us. I am so thankful for my two.
