I’m not a cyclist. I say that to people all the time, especially when I’m encouraging someone to start cycling. I want people to understand I’m an average person — I’m not a supreme athlete. I’m not even all that self-disciplined, really. I’m just like everyone else, only I started riding a bicycle three years ago.
My first bike as an adult was a loaner hybrid from a friend, then I bought a hand-me-down, 25+-year-old Fuju from a co-worker. I’m still riding that $50 bike. She’s beautiful to me, but to any true cyclist, she would probably bring laughter. From her pink handlebar tape to her zip-tied water bottle holder, she’s my favorite thing. I prefer to call her “vintage” over “old” but either way, she’s got some years — and some miles — on her. So if money is your excuse, I’m here to tell you it’s not a very good one. If I can afford to do this, you can too.
For two years, I’ve carried around tubing and a tool in case I got a flat while out on the road. Only this year, three years into riding, did I know you also needed a co2 cartridge and a pump to inflate the tubing. Seriously, what respectable cyclist (or person with a brain) wouldn’t know something like that? My friend Matt was kind enough to stifle his laughter when the revelation was made, (bless him), but I could see him die a little on the inside. Seriously, if I can do this, you can too.
Frequently people tell me they want to ride but they don’t because they’d, “…fall over after three miles on a bike.” Well, they might. I did. My first time back on a bike, I was so proud of my three miles and yes, the trek absolutely exhausted me. But it’s where I started and everyone has to start somewhere.
I share this post partly to remind myself not to take all this too seriously and partly to encourage you to do this. If you’ve been on the fence about riding or if you’ve thought it might be fun, then do it. Because if I can pedal my way around town, anyone can. Just make the decision to start. Come ride with me. I keep a slow pace and ride for enjoyment. You can trust me, I’m not a cyclist. 😉
I love riding too. I haven’t at all since last year so I may just have to get my bike out this weekend and go for a ride 🙂 I use my new(er) spin bike all the time though so that gives me a taste of it without going for a real bike ride. Keep it up friend, you are doing aweseome!
