Perfectly said. Everybody loves Mary, and the reason was not just because she was smart and beautiful. As the character she made mistakes, got herself into dumb situations, and was as neurotic as any of us, yet she “made it after all”. She let that spill into her advocacy life. She showed us that she can live life with grace and style. She has a successful career where many might have thrown in the towel. She lived life and still had time to advocate and make a difference. You have expressed this perfectly here. She – and all of us – are going to make it after all.

Thanks for the post, Victoria. Mary was the only real person I knew to put on that pedestal growing up in the 80s, and still to this day she’s often the first I think of despite all the many more people who wear D on their sleeves. Very inspirational, just for the fact that she put herself out there to show you CAN do this.

You really should get a sponsorship from Kleenex or something. The video made me cry. Your writing made me cry. And even the theme song made me cry. I grew up watching The Dick Van Dyke Show in reruns & was old enough to watch a few of the last years of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. I was 9 when it went off the air. I didn’t have diabetes yet. That wouldn’t rear it’s ugly head for another 14 years. I remember thinking of Mary not long after I was diagnosed. I’d read somewhere that she was in her 30’s when she was diagnosed. Somehow that made it seem better. Like I wasn’t alone. :)

Also, I cry at everything too. :)
