Yes, I really am an adult.

Yes, I really am an adult despite my sucking applesauce from a tiny squeezable pouch in rush-hour traffic. Or despite my drinking juice from a miniature juice box featuring SpongeBob Squarepants in the middle of church. Or despite my eating a pack of Sweetie’s candies during a board meeting.

Anybody else with me on this one?

As a type 1 diabetic, I measure carbohydrates to give myself insulin. Those carbs are measured in 15g increments, of which I base my insulin doses. As luck would have it, the only snacks and juice packs pre-measured in 15g increments are made for 9-year-olds, not 29-year-olds. I fully recognize how juvenile I look drinking a Juicy Juice or eating squeezable yogurt, but it is what it is. At least if I had children, maybe I could use them as my out, but alas, my dogs don’t count.

(Oh hi, yes I’m eating this adorable snack made for kids but you know, I was in a rush and it’s all I had in the diaper doggie bag. My kids dogs just love these.)

Last week at Blissdom, conference attendees received a bag of swag, and there was some pretty fantastic stuff in there. When I pulled a GoGo SqueeZ out, I immediately looked at the label. 15g. Sweet, I thought. When I left the hotel for a bike ride downtown, I grabbed a couple and threw them in my purse. When I set off on my route, I tucked a couple of them in the back of my riding shirt. Shockingly, they fit way better than a Gatorade bottle or a juice box.

;

And as usual, my blood sugar dropped while riding, but no fear — I had 15g of applesauce handy. They were so easy to unscrew and gulp, I didn’t even have to pull the bike over! I was an instant fan! I headed back to the conference, found the GoGo SqueeZ booth and began raving about the product. I also told them I would’ve never picked these up on a shelf because they were so clearly marketed for children. But now, add it to the list of kid-like, low-blood sugar fixes. For me, the bicycle fit was even better.

Here’s my recommendation: Buy GoGo SqueeZ. If you need a quick 15g snack, it’s great. But if you’re a cyclist and need an easy-to-stash, easy-to-consume, 15g snack — it’s perfection. Seriously, I love this product. And on that note, it’s sad what gets a diabetic’s juices going. (pun intended)

DISCLAIMER: I got nothing for this. This post was of my own accord, not endorsed by GoGo SqueeZ. In fact, they don’t even know I wrote the post. I did get several free samples of the product, but not because of my diabetes or this blog. I got them ’cause my employer paid lots of money for me to go to a(n unrelated-to-diabetes) conference the company sponsored. I think it’s clear that I would not turn down free GoGo SqueeZes anytime soon though. 😉

  1. Ha! I had Andros donate 5000 of these for our JDRF Walk for the Cure in Toronto last year. (Makers of Bonne Maman jams) So many D parents thought they were awesome, and something new in their diabetes arsenal! If you freeze them, its an instant ice pack in your packed lunch- keeps everything fresher, but defrosts in time for lunch : )
